Roblox breaks revenue record, but stocks plummet 20%
The financial market does not forgive, and not even one of the biggest names in the world of gaming as a service escapes. Roblox Corporation saw its stocks plummet 20% after disclosing numbers below expectations for the last quarter of 2024, despite having recorded its highest revenue to date.
In the fiscal report for the quarter ended on December 31, 2024, the company revealed a decrease in the number of daily active users, which went from 89 million to 85.3 million - a reduction of 4% compared to the previous quarter. This number also fell about 3 million below what investors were expecting.
Furthermore, the total engagement time of players dropped 9.7%, registering 18.7 billion hours played during the period. Meanwhile, total revenues were close to €1.36 billion, slightly below market projections.
Despite the negative market reaction, Roblox continues to record impressive numbers. The company distributed approximately €280 million to platform content creators, a new record. This value reflects the company's commitment to encouraging developers to expand the game's ecosystem, which heavily relies on the community's creativity.
Roblox's strategy has always been based on offering an expansive and interactive environment, allowing players to create and monetize their own experiences within the platform. However, the lower-than-expected numbers raise doubts about the sustainability of this growth in the long term.
With the competitive landscape intensifying, including platforms like Fortnite heavily investing in content creation and new virtual world technologies emerging, Roblox Corporation will need to find new ways to maintain player engagement and reverse this downward trend.
Now the question remains: will Roblox be able to resume its growth or is it entering a period of stagnation?
