Riot Games has formalized that they are working on a massive overhaul of their main title, confirming initial reports from Bloomberg. Although executive producer Paul 'Pabro' Bellezza denies the nomenclature League of Legends 2, the changes announced on December 18 constitute an unprecedented scale evolution for the MOBA, under the provisional title of League of Legends Next.

The project, which involves the majority of Riot's current team, focuses on fundamental pillars that have long lacked modernization. Among the novelties confirmed by Andrei 'Meddler' van Roon, studio head, and Pabro, are:

New Client: A fully integrated interface with the gaming experience, eliminating the current separate application.

Summoner's Rift: Complete visual update and introduction of new gameplay mechanics on the main map.

Game Systems: Overhaul of Runes and pre-match choices.

New Players: Total restructuring of the initial experience to facilitate the entry of new users.

Although Riot maintains the philosophy of continuous updates, the team admitted that certain transformations only make sense as a "larger package of changes." More details on the progress of development will be shared in 2026, at some point between MSI (ending on July 12) and Worlds (starting on November 9).

Until then, the studio will maintain its regular update schedule. The announcement signals a necessary commitment to the longevity of the title, addressing structural issues that have persisted for over a decade.

This overhaul promises to be the most important chapter in the franchise's history after 2026.
