Red Dead Redemption 2 can reach the Switch 2 by 2025
Red Dead Redemption 2, one of the most awarded games from Rockstar Games, may finally receive a major update: a version for the Nintendo Switch 2 and an update patch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The information comes from GameReactor, which claims to have heard from "sources close to Rockstar" that the releases may happen still in 2025.
According to these sources, the plan includes two fronts: an optimized version of the game for the Switch 2, not officially announced by Nintendo, and a technical update for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S that would bring graphical and performance improvements up to the standards of the new generation. There is no confirmation about the patch content, but it is expected 4K resolution, frame rate improvements and reduced loading times.
Speculation about the version for the Switch 2 was also reinforced by the portal Nintenduo, which states that the title should be released within the current fiscal year of Take-Two, which ends on March 31, 2026. It is not yet defined if the version for Switch will be available only in digital format or will also have a physical edition.
During a conference with investors, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, Strauss Zelnick, commented on the new Nintendo platform:
"We are releasing four titles with the Nintendo Switch 2, and I think it's a wider variety of releases than we've ever offered with a new Nintendo platform."
He also acknowledged that historically, third-party publisher support on Nintendo consoles has always been challenging, but there has been a change in stance from the company:
"I think Nintendo has been very accommodating in dealing with this. And we are also getting ready, because we are very optimistic about the platform."
The four confirmed games for the Switch 2 are:
- Civilization VII (release on June 5, 2025)
- NBA 2K (no confirmed date)
- WWE 2K (no confirmed date)
- Borderlands 4 (September 12, 2025)
The presence of Red Dead Redemption 2 among these titles is still not official, but it may be indicative of a change in strategy on the part of Take-Two, which seeks to leverage the premium catalog on new platforms. Zelnick's own words suggest this:
"Obviously we want to be where the consumers are. But we wouldn't necessarily take all titles to all platforms. There are also great catalog opportunities."
It is worth noting that, although GTA VI is expected to remain an exclusive of the current generation, GTA V and RDR2 remain strong candidates for re-releases. In 2023, Rockstar had already re-released the first Red Dead Redemption for Switch and PS4, reigniting rumors about a larger movement around the franchise.
If confirmed, these versions will represent the first time that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be available in an official portable mode, marking a significant technical advancement, considering the size of the game (around 120 GB in the current version) and its graphical demands.
