PvE Mode of Marathon Triples the Audience on Steam
Injecting cooperative content without the constant pressure of direct combat against other users proved to be a precise shot for revitalizing a title that was losing momentum. Bungie temporarily introduced the Vault Breaker mode, a concept focused purely on PvE within Marathon, and the public's response was swift: the number of concurrent active users on the Steam platform simply tripled within just 24 hours.
The movement on the Valve store chart began to take shape following a modest peak of 5,200 players on July 20. The new option going live the next day was all it took for the count to soar to nearly 15,000 people connected at once, marking the highest daily surge of the project since the second season debuted on June 2.
The simultaneous community mobilization during the campaign dubbed Revival Week also helped boost these numbers in the early hours.
Adding environment-focused mechanics aligns with a trend that has solidified in the main extraction games today, leaving works like ARC Raiders as rare exceptions solely dedicated to PvP.
Removing the new mode on August 4, however, is a bureaucratic decision that threatens to squander all this momentum. Treating such a well-received addition as a mere temporary event for data collection reveals a troubling lack of vision from management. Though the current mark remains far from the historical record of 80,000 users recorded at launch, the recent surge clearly indicates the path developers should decisively follow. If the company persists in limiting access to those who prefer a cooperative experience, the trend is likely to see the player count plummet again once the testing period concludes.
