With the PS5 and Xbox Series X/Series S to debut in November, here are the games expected to arrive right when the new consoles launch.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X/Series S are finally about to release, with a little over a month until both new consoles finally bring us into next-gen. Given the wait and anticipation that has built up for them over the past year, naturally one of the biggest parts of the next-gen launch is looking forward to the new titles that will debut alongside Sony and Microsoft’s systems.

With the new consoles on the horizon, we’re breaking down the launch titles that are known to be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/Series at (or near) their release, and we’ll update the lists for both platforms as new titles are announced or confirmed. Additionally, we’ll also take a short look at some of the other game-related features for each system such as backward compatibility, subscription services, and more.

Xbox Series X/Series S Backward Compatibility and Smart Delivery

Alongside the new first and third-party titles that are releasing for the Xbox Series X/Series S when the consoles launch, both systems will feature the ability to play titles from previous Xbox generations through backward compatibility. Additionally there is also Smart Delivery, which is Microsoft’s new feature ensuring that players receive the most fully-optimized version of a game for the specific piece of hardware that they are playing on, whether they are on an Xbox Series X, Xbox One, or PC.

At the moment, this seemingly includes a vast majority of Xbox One titles alongside previous backward compatible titles from the Xbox 360 and original Xbox generations. Notably, several titles from the Xbox One will also be receiving optimized versions for the Series X and Series S when they launch.

To date, here are some of the Xbox One titles confirmed to be getting optimizations for Xbox Series X and Series S at launch:

  • Forza Horizon 4
  • Gears 5
  • Ori and the Will of the Wisps
  • Sea of Thieves
  • Tell Me Why

Xbox Game Pass

Microsoft’s key initiative over the past several has been investing in Xbox Game Pass, its subscription service that brings members a rotating selection of new titles and old favorites alongside Microsoft’s first-party Xbox titles. At launch, Xbox Game Pass subscribers will be able to access the service on both Xbox Series X and Series S, giving new system owners the chance to play to over 100 titles from across the various Xbox console libraries.

Notably, Game Pass will be getting some big upgrades in the near future from third-party partners and studios. Microsoft announced that EA Play will be added for Game Pass subscribers at no additional cost, which will bring EA’s collection of titles to the service on November 10. Additionally, following the acquisition of Bethesda Softworks and its parent company ZeniMax Media, many of Bethesda’s back catalog titles will be added to Game Pass in the near future.

At the moment, the company confirmed that the launch selection of backward compatible titles on the PS5 would likely be limited to start and tailored to the most popular PS4 games. However, Sony’s Jim Ryan clarified that the PS5 will likely support the vast majority of legacy PS4 titles, but will not be able to support backward compatibility with the earlier PlayStation generations: the PS3, PS2, or PS1.

PlayStation Plus Collection

Announced during Sony’s PS5 Showcase last month, PlayStation will be adding an extra incentive at launch for PS5 owners for those with an active PlayStation Plus subscription, the PlayStation Plus Collection. Intended as a “Greatest Hits” compilation of some of the best titles that released on the PS4, the PlayStation Plus Collection will bring a group of 18 backward compatible titles to the PS5 at launch, and will be free to PS Plus members.
