Overheating of the PS5 affects the finals of EVO Japan 2025

The EVO Japan 2025 faced relevant technical issues involving the PlayStation 5, compromising decisive matches of games like Guilty Gear Strive and generating dissatisfaction among both players and the audience. The main cause: overheating of several console units, which could not withstand long hours of use under high temperatures at the event venue.

The most symbolic case occurred during the grand final of Guilty Gear Strive, where the player ReDitto, coming from the losers' bracket, faced Daru_I-No in an attempt of a historic comeback. At 7 minutes and 30 seconds into the broadcast, the video records the first signs of the problem, when technical failures began to repeatedly interrupt the match. The competition's rhythm was disrupted, with successive pauses for correction attempts, visibly affecting the players' performance.

"That PS5 melted my adapter," reported ReDitto on social media, directly pointing to the hardware as the cause of the failure. Other professionals commented on the incident, suggesting the periodic exchange of consoles during tournaments to avoid similar situations.

The problem was not isolated. Punk, champion of EVO 2024 of Street Fighter 6, also faced difficulties at this year's EVO Japan. In his X profile, he criticized the organization:

"They shouldn't leave those PS5s with their terrible cooling system on for more than 10 hours without expecting consequences."

According to backstage reports, several PS5 units showed thermal instability after long sessions of continuous use. The internal cooling system of the current model, although efficient under ideal conditions, seems not to have been sufficient for the high thermal demand environment that characterizes events like the EVO.

It is worth noting that, since acquiring EVO in 2021, Sony has played a central role in organizing tournaments and promoting the PlayStation 5 as the official platform of major competitions. With this control, the company also bears the responsibility of ensuring adequate technical conditions, something that is now called into question after the incidents recorded.

This is not the first time that the PS5 hardware has raised concerns: in previous events, there were specific criticisms of the console's stability under stress, but the case of EVO Japan 2025 stands out for its visibility and direct impact on championship decisions.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has not yet officially commented on the incident, but the community's expectation is that measures will be urgently taken, especially considering the approaching EVO 2025 in the United States, the main edition of the circuit, scheduled for August.
