Obsidian faces a class action lawsuit for violating labor laws
The court documents describe that Obsidian allegedly acted deliberately to inflate its financial profit margins at the expense of basic rights of its employees. The list of charges includes the non-payment of minimum wages and mandatory overtime, as well as withholding amounts due upon contract termination. To make matters worse, the company is also accused of denying regular breaks for rest and meals to its employees. It's unfortunate to realize that a studio so beloved by the public for its narrative abilities resorts to such abusive practices behind the scenes, treating testing professionals as disposable parts in the production machinery.
The developer of Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds has come under the scrutiny of California courts due to its internal administrative practices. The public civil action was initially filed by Victoria Turner, who worked as a quality assurance (QA) lead in the production of The Outer Worlds 2. The complaint points to chronic irregularities that directly disrespect local conduct codes.
The legal complaint involves a large group of workers, seeking financial compensation for all individuals who have provided or are providing services as non-exempt employees in the state of California, covering the period from October 9, 2021, until the time the lawsuit is officially filed. The action demands the repayment of overdue wages, unreimbursed business expenses, interest, attorney's fees, and administrative fines based on local protective legislation.
The company’s response was standard and straightforward from its legal team. The studio completely denied the allegations and demands definitive dismissal of the complaint.
"Obsidian generally and specifically denies each and every allegation"
This legal turmoil surfaces at a particularly delicate commercial moment for the company. Last February, the brand confirmed that it does not intend to produce a third installment in the space franchise after the sequel released in 2025 failed to meet sales targets set by management. Linking project closures and financial tightening to the non-fulfillment of basic duties with the technical team highlights how the pressure for immediate results often deteriorates the game development environment. The resolution of this legal dispute is expected to take months, but the producer's reputation among the community has already taken a notable hit.
