Nintendo wins lawsuit and demands a fine of $17,000 for game piracy
Nintendo of America secured a legal victory against Jesse Keighin, known as Every Game Guru, after accusations of illegal game streaming. The lawsuit, initiated after several ignored notifications, pointed out that Keighin streamed gameplay of at least 10 games from Nintendo before their official releases.
According to documents, "Keighin continued to illegally stream Nintendo's copyrighted works, mocking the company and U.S. law." In response to warnings, the streamer allegedly sent a letter stating that he could "activate hundreds of channels and stream all day" without worrying about legal implications.
By not responding within the legal deadlines, Keighin was found guilty. However, to streamline the judgment, Nintendo decided to focus the damages claim on just one title: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, demanding $10,000 for copyright infringements.
Additionally, the company requested $7,500 for multiple violations of anti-piracy protection systems. Therefore, the total amount Keighin must pay exceeds $17,000. As part of the decision, he is also prohibited from using or streaming any Nintendo material obtained illegally.
This case adds to the long list of strict measures that Nintendo has taken in recent years against piracy, following the example of other recent actions aimed at protecting its intellectual properties.
