Nintendo wants to discourage scalpers at the launch of Switch 2!
Something that always happens when a console is launched is a high number of people buying the video game that certainly enters an absurd hype made by fans.
The Nintendo knows this and also knows that many of the buyers, at the beginning, are not real fans, but scalpers buying more than they should, and this discourages those who will want to buy the console, since these same scalpers will sell these consoles for a price several times higher than the brand's owner company.
"We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated so far," Furukawa told Nikkei (via VGC). "We are making preparations."
Although the Switch was popular when it was first released in 2017 and the stock sold out quickly, it was only with the COVID pandemic that demand quickly outstripped supply. Combined with the global shortage of semiconductors at the time, the Switch became a sought-after item in early 2020, with resellers using the opportunity to buy available stock and profit from it.
Scalpers were also a major issue for Microsoft and Sony, as the launch of the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 consoles in late 2020 saw chronic shortages due to resellers using bots to snatch up all consoles whenever a restock arrived through online markets.
Furukawa had previously mentioned that Nintendo's strategy to deal with scalpers revolves around a healthy supply of Switch 2 consoles for its official release this year. "As a countermeasure against resale, we believe that the most important thing is to produce a sufficient number to meet customer demand, and that idea has not changed since last year", said Furukawa in 2024.
Everything gets more interesting as April approaches, with the Nintendo Direct coming to show more about the console's power, price, and most importantly, its release!
