Nintendo Switch 2: Less battery, more power, and a new way to play

The hype was real, and finally Nintendo revealed details about the highly anticipated Switch 2, set to be released on June 5, 2025. But not all news are good. If you were expecting a longer battery life for long gaming sessions, you may be disappointed: the autonomy of the new console will be lower than that of some previous models.

The official battery life estimate for the Switch 2 ranges from 2 to 6.5 hours, depending on the games and settings used. In comparison, the original model released in 2017 already offered between 2.5 and 6.5 hours, while later versions, like the Switch OLED, increased this time to an impressive 4.5 to 9 hours. This means that, in certain scenarios, the new console may perform worse than its predecessors in terms of autonomy.

And it doesn't stop there: the charging time also deserves attention. The Switch 2 will take about 3 hours to fully recharge in sleep mode, which can be frustrating for frequent gamers.

Specifications: what changes in the Switch 2?

Despite the battery being a weak point, Nintendo promises significant improvements in other aspects. The Switch 2 will continue with the hybrid proposal, allowing players to switch between portable mode and TV mode, but now with a larger and more technological display.

Here are some of the confirmed specifications:

Screen: 7.9-inch LCD with HDR support
Resolution: Up to 4K when docked
Internal storage: 256 GB (finally a significant advance)
Battery: 5220 mAh, of lithium ions (non-removable)
New Joy-Con 2: Strong magnets for better fixation, larger buttons, and a dedicated "C" button for GameChat and audio control

The change to LCD may be seen as a step back for those who have already gotten used to the OLED screen of the premium model, but HDR support can compensate for the difference, delivering more vibrant colors and enhanced contrast.
