Nintendo Switch 2: A Technical Revolution or Just More of the Same?
Nintendo officially revealed the Switch 2, with a global release date set for June 5, 2025. The new console brings significant technical advancements, such as a 7.9-inch LCD screen with 1080p resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate in handheld mode, and support for 4K HDR when connected to the TV. Additionally, it features 256GB of internal storage, redesigned magnetic Joy-Cons, and the new GameChat feature, allowing video calls and screen sharing during games.
However, not everyone is convinced that the Switch 2 represents the innovation for which Nintendo is known. Shuhei Yoshida, former executive of PlayStation, expressed disappointment with Nintendo's approach. In an appearance on the Easy Allies podcast, Yoshida commented:
"To me, it was a bit of a confusing message from Nintendo. In a sense, I think Nintendo is losing its identity. They have always been about creating new experiences, like designing hardware and games together to create something new. But the Switch 2, as everyone expected, is just an improved Switch."
Yoshida also criticized the presentation of third-party games during the announcement, highlighting titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring, which have been available on other platforms for years. He noted that while it is positive for those who only play on Nintendo consoles, for players who have multiple platforms, the novelty is limited.
"Of course, it's a more powerful Switch, so it's great if you only play on Nintendo hardware. But for us, players who own multiple consoles and play on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, the games they showed... In theory, it's amazing to have all these great games on Nintendo hardware, but what they showed was... meh."
Despite the criticisms, the Switch 2 offers innovative features like GameChat, accessed by the new "C" button on the right Joy-Con, allowing voice and video communication during games. Additionally, titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will receive updates that allow equipment repairs through the Zelda Notes app, offering a new dynamic to the games' durability system.
The console will launch with exclusive games like Donkey Kong Bananza, Kirby Air Riders, and Mario Kart World, the latter offering an open-world racing experience for up to 24 players. However, the high price of the Switch 2, starting at US$ 449.99, and the increase in game prices to US$ 79.99, have generated criticism among fans, especially due to the perceived lack of innovation.
In summary, the Nintendo Switch 2 represents a significant technical advancement, but raises questions about Nintendo's creative direction. It remains to be seen if the company will be able to balance innovation and tradition to meet fan expectations and maintain its unique identity in the console market.
