Next Xbox may be delayed until after 2027

Microsoft is facing a complex scenario for the succession of Xbox Series X|S. According to information shared by journalist Jez Corden, from Windows Central, the launch of the new hardware may not occur before the end of 2027. The project, which aims to transform the console into a PC with Windows optimized for the living room, faces logistical and technical challenges, especially regarding the high global demand for high-performance RAM memories, which inflates production costs and pressures the schedule of the giant from Redmond.

Microsoft's central proposal is to merge the Windows ecosystem with the simplified interface of a console, using the Xbox Full-Screen Experience. However, aligning this architecture with cutting-edge components in a market contested by other technology sectors makes the 2027 window uncertain. For a brand that has recorded hardware sales inferior to the PlayStation 5, delaying the new generation is bad news, as it prolongs the response time to competition at a time when the market demands technical innovation.

The use of Windows as the core of the system aims to offer unprecedented flexibility, allowing greater compatibility and ease for developers. However, the practical execution of this idea — ensuring that the operating system does not compromise the fluidity of the "couch" experience — still needs to be refined. Corden emphasizes that, although the concept is known internally, the feasibility of delivering this product within the stipulated deadline is questionable, given that Microsoft still needs to balance the final cost for the consumer with the project's ambitions.

Even with the support of Xbox Game Pass, the pressure for unit console sales remains a critical point. If the company cannot align the supply of chips and components by the end of 2027, the technological gap with rivals may become a difficult obstacle to overcome. The plan to transform the Xbox into a definitive hybrid between console and PC is promising, but the execution seems to be further away than enthusiasts would like.
