New PlayStation studio aims to reinvent social multiplayer
While the spotlight is still on Sony's investments in games as a service, the company reveals a new strategic step with the formation of teamLFG, now officially part of PlayStation Studios. The studio, based in Bellevue, Washington, is composed of industry veterans and was born as an initiative incubated within Bungie, a company acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2022.
The acronym LFG, short for "Looking For Group", summarizes the team's goal well: to build social experiences where the search for groups and connections is the driving force of fun.
"We want players to feel excited to see that their teammates are already online, creating memories and legends together," the studio explained in an official statement.
According to the announcement, the team brings names that have worked directly on projects like Destiny, Halo, League of Legends, Fortnite, Roblox, and Rec Room. In addition to their consolidated experience in multiplayer games, teamLFG is also betting on new talents to shape their first title, still unnamed.
The project will be a team action game, with a hybrid inspiration from platforms, fighting games, MOBAs, life simulators, and even titles starring frogs — an unusual description given by the developers themselves. The setting will be a science fiction with mythological elements, and the tone promises to be comical and accessible.
Still without a release date, the development will follow a community-centered approach, with early tests, constant feedback, and a dynamic experience, shaped in real-time with the player base. The strategy reinforces Sony's commitment to sustainable multiplayer experiences in the long term, even after recent cuts and cancellations in other similar projects.
Previous rumors suggest that Sony is working on an internal multiplayer title with elements similar to Super Smash Bros., tentatively called Gummy Bears. Although nothing has been officially confirmed, the description given by teamLFG raises doubts about a possible connection between the projects.
The announcement was made by Hermen Hulst, current CEO of Sony's Studio Business Group, as part of the expansion of PlayStation Studios, and follows the diversification trend started with the acquisition of Firewalk Studios and other names focused on competitive and social multiplayer.
With this new addition, PlayStation Studios continues to strengthen its long-term strategy to balance its single-player successes with community-centered multiplayer projects focused on longevity.
