New God of War may be smaller than expected - but Kratos is still back

Jeff Grubb indicates that the project is not the next big title from Santa Monica Studio

In recent months, rumors about a new God of War have taken over the community, fueled by speculations that Kratos could return to Ancient Greece. However, according to insider Jeff Grubb, expectations may be a bit off.

During the Giant Bomb podcast, Grubb clarified that, although a new God of War is in development, it is not the next big project from Santa Monica Studio. It is a parallel title, smaller in scale and unrelated to the main game being developed under the direction of Cory Barlog.

A spin-off? An experimental project? What to expect from the new God of War?

Although details are still scarce, Grubb made it clear that this new God of War will not be a major title, like God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok (2022). In his words:

"It's a parallel project. Something that is not equivalent to the next big game from Santa Monica. So, you know, it's very cool. Sony already has the God of War games on PlayStation Plus, that's good enough. They have access to these games, some via streaming, but most ready to download and play."

This statement indicates that Sony may be investing in a smaller game, perhaps a spin-off or a standalone experience, similar to what happened with Uncharted: The Lost Legacy or Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Kratos is back - but in what way?

Despite being a smaller project, Kratos remains the main protagonist, which in itself is already exciting for fans. However, the big question remains: will it be a story set before the events of Ragnarok? A prologue? A new narrative arc?

With Santa Monica Studio working on a new large-scale game - which may not be related to God of War - this smaller title may serve to keep the franchise alive while the next big chapter is still in production.

And Sony? Total silence about the project

So far, Sony has not officially commented on the rumors, but the signs that a new God of War is on the way are becoming stronger. If the project is indeed smaller and more advanced in development, there is a chance of an announcement still in 2025, possibly at a PlayStation Showcase or similar event.

Regardless of the scale, any new game starring Kratos is already a reason for attention. Now, it remains to wait for more details and find out if this project will really be a bridge to something even bigger in the future of the franchise.
