NCSoft diversifies its portfolio and focuses on casual games in 2026
NCSoft is undergoing a profound restructuring of its business model to reduce its historical dependence on MMORPGs. The most positive move in this new phase is the expansion into the global market of casual games. Through the acquisitions of Springcomes and the Vietnamese developer LIFTHU, the company now has studios with expertise in frequent releases and high penetration in the western audience. All of this operation will be centralized on its own platform, specifically developed to optimize costs and increase the commercial success rate of each new project launched.
This change of course is already showing practical results. The title Aion 2 started the year 2025 with a more transparent communication and a less aggressive "live service" model, which helped NCSoft regain the trust of part of the community. During G-Star 2025, held in November in South Korea, it was possible to test new bets in shooter and subculture genres, which should reach the market in the coming months to expand the variety of the brand's catalog.
However, the transition process brings negative news for players of established titles. NCSoft confirmed that it will gradually end services for less profitable games, such as Hoyeon and Blade & Soul 2. It is regrettable that the pursuit of "broader audiences" results in the abandonment of active communities, highlighting a strictly financial priority over maintaining the legacy of its franchises. The strategy of "playing it safe" with casual titles and ending projects that did not meet aggressive profit goals demonstrates a critical stance towards the preservation of its own products.
The company believes that this reorganization will be the pillar to grow again and achieve relevance beyond the online RPG niche. The focus now turns to the planned releases for 2026, which will test whether this new multiplatform identity will be sustainable in the long term or if it will sacrifice quality in the name of quantity.
