Mortal Kombat 1 will no longer have DLCs, confirms NetherRealm
The NetherRealm Studios has officially confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 will no longer receive DLCs, ending any expectation of new characters or additional chapters for the story. The statement was made after the community demanded the continuation of support for the game, especially after the recent release of Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, a digital version that gathers all content released so far.
The definitive edition, released in early May 2025, includes the base game, the Khaos Reigns expansion, and two fighter packs. Many interpreted that the update cycle for MK1 was about to come to an end. The suspicion was confirmed by the game's official account on the X network:
"We are listening to players' requests for continuous support for Mortal Kombat 1. And, although we continue to offer balancing adjustments and fixes, there will be no new DLC characters or additional story chapters from this point on."
Subsequently, the studio reiterated that it understands the frustration of some fans and explained that the end of support is to redirect the team's efforts:
"We know some players will be disappointed, but we need to focus on the next project to make it the best it can be."
Although they have not formally announced their next title, NetherRealm has two obvious paths: a possible direct sequel with Mortal Kombat 2, or the long-awaited return of the Injustice franchise, which has not had a new game since Injustice 2, released in 2017.
The last significant additional content added to Mortal Kombat 1 was the presence of Floyd, a hidden pink ninja, who appeared as a secret battle — something that can be interpreted as a final easter egg. This addition occurred months after the release of guest characters like Omni-Man, Peacemaker, and Homelander, who were part of the paid packs.
Outside the gaming universe, the Mortal Kombat universe is still active: the sequel to the movie, Mortal Kombat 2, had new images revealed by Warner Bros. and is set to premiere on October 24, 2025 in theaters.
With the confirmation of the end of support for MK1, the cycle closes with about eight months of post-launch content, since its debut in September 2024, representing a shorter support period compared to previous titles in the franchise.
