Moon Studios avoids immediate risk after criticism of new RPG

The initial negative reception of No Rest for the Wicked, a new early access project from Moon Studios, sparked a series of reactions — including from CEO Thomas Mahler, who even suggested that the company could close its doors. Now, the executive clarified the comments and stated that the studio is "not in immediate financial danger," although he acknowledges that the impact of negative reviews is real and relevant.

Launched in early access on Steam, No Rest for the Wicked received its biggest update so far at the end of April, titled The Breach. The update brought new missions, Hardcore mode, new weapons, and adjustments to various mechanics. However, the content was harshly criticized by users, especially for the Soulslike difficulty which, according to reviews, does not provide the same sense of reward characteristic of FromSoftware games.

Shortly after the negative feedback, Mahler posted a vent on Discord:

"I think people think I'm joking when I ask for positive reviews because in their minds there's always a big publisher covering the costs."

The CEO also highlighted that the negative visibility directly affects the game's sales:

"If you like Wicked and haven't left a positive review yet, know that we may not be here in a few months if we continue to be bombarded with bad reviews, which leads people to not buy the game. This means we don't generate revenue and will have to close the studio."

The statement sparked controversy and, later, Mahler went to X (Twitter) to provide context:

"Most people who have played after the hotfixes for The Breach have been extremely positive. I left the post on Discord to counter some absurd reviews."

He also criticized the platform's review system:

"I have no problem asking active players who enjoy the game to leave a positive review. The current system allows someone to leave a negative review without even talking about the game and then ask for a refund. That review still counts."

Moon Studios, founded in 2010, became known for titles like Ori and the Blind Forest (2015) and Ori and the Will of the Wisps (2020), both praised by critics and audiences for their art, soundtrack, and refined gameplay. No Rest for the Wicked, on the other hand, is the studio's attempt to explore a new genre: isometric action RPG with a focus on loot, technical combat, and dark atmosphere.

Despite the turbulence, Mahler stated that the team remains committed to improvements and new content. There is currently no official release date for the final version of the game.
