Minecraft will continue to be paid and with no plans to adopt the free-to-play model, says Mojang
If you were expecting to see Minecraft become free at some point, you can forget about that idea. Despite the growth of free-to-play models in the industry, Mojang made it clear that the iconic sandbox game will not follow that trend. During an interview with IGN, Ingela Garneij, the game's producer, stated:
"That doesn't work with the way we built the game. It was made for another purpose."
Minecraft's success doesn't depend on being free-to-play
Unlike many modern games that rely on aggressive microtransactions and continuous monetization systems, Minecraft maintains a one-time purchase model, without the need for a free-to-play scheme to ensure its popularity. Agnes Larsson, the game's director, reinforced this view, explaining that this approach is part of Mojang's values and the game's identity.
This doesn't mean that the title doesn't generate revenue continuously. Minecraft has a robust ecosystem of optional content, such as skins, texture packs, and DLCs, which provide a source of income without compromising the base experience. Additionally, the constant renewal of its player base, driven by new generations of children discovering the game, maintains success without the need for changes in the business model.
The best-selling game in history doesn't need to change
Even without adopting free-to-play, Minecraft has already established itself as the best-selling game in history, with over 300 million copies sold. No other game has been able to surpass it in this regard, not even giants like Grand Theft Auto V, which has sold around 195 million units.
While other titles rely on free-to-play strategies to grow and keep players engaged, Minecraft continues to be a phenomenon independent of this format. After all, why change a formula that has already proven to be extremely successful?
And you, are you one of the millions of players who have already purchased Minecraft?
