Minecraft Movie surpasses US$ 816 million and threatens Super Mario's box office record.
With $816 million raised worldwide, The Minecraft Movie solidifies itself as the biggest success in Hollywood in 2025 so far, and advances towards becoming the most profitable video game adaptation in history, currently held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which has grossed $1.36 billion.
According to Variety, the film's global performance includes $67.1 million in the UK, $33.7 million in Germany, $31.8 million in Australia, and $28.4 million in Mexico. Even in its fourth week in theaters, the film still made $60.5 million last weekend, maintaining a solid pace after a historic debut.
The Minecraft Movie debuted with $157 million just in the opening weekend, claiming the title of biggest domestic opening of all time for a video game-based film. Two weeks after its release, it had already surpassed the $550 million mark, showing rare stamina for genre productions.
Part of the success can be attributed to the direct appeal to young audiences, with quick humor, explosions, music, and direct references to the Minecraft universe. The appearance of the chicken jockey, an iconic creature from the game, became a meme phenomenon and drove packed sessions - in some cases, with spectators bringing real chickens to the movie theaters.
"Even before the movie was released, Chris said it would make a trillion dollars," recalls one of the community reports, in an ironic tone, but today it sounds less absurd given the numbers.
The challenge now is to maintain the pace and surpass The Super Mario Bros. Movie before interest wanes - especially with the chicken jockey meme starting to lose steam. If successful, The Minecraft Movie could redefine the limits of commercial success for game adaptations in cinema.
