Microsoft decides to raise Xbox console prices on a global scale
The impact of this decision on the Brazilian market remains without official details for now, as the initial announcement focused on the figures from the international headquarters. We now depend on the stance of local representatives to understand the extent of the financial impact on workers and whether local retailers will immediately apply the price increase to the shelves.
The new price list takes effect on August 1, 2026, and will affect those planning to buy a new video game in the coming months. Consumers looking for the entry-level versions with 512 GB of internal storage will need to spend an additional $100, while devices equipped with 1 TB will see a hefty increase of $150. To make matters worse for those who require extra space for today’s massive games, the manufacturer confirmed that it will remove an important option from its lineup.
“discontinue our 2 TB model”
This entire price restructuring was explained by the top management in an official announcement published on the Xbox Wire portal. The management team at Microsoft recalled that they tried to hold prices steady after a smaller increase last year, but negotiations with suppliers failed. The executives’ statement reveals how the gaming division lost control over its cost spreadsheets.
“unfortunately, console storage and memory prices have increased by over 2.5 times”
The hardware sector has been struggling with instability in the supply chain, and the owner of Xbox emphasized that video games are taking the hardest hit in this component crisis compared to the phone or computer market. This happens because consoles are traditionally sold at a loss in stores, with profits coming from subscriptions and software sales. It displays a tremendous managerial inadequacy to pass this astronomical bill directly to the end consumer, undermining the brand’s own user base. The situation is likely to become even more chaotic, as the company’s internal projections indicate that the cost of these essential memories is expected to double again by the end of 2027. In a scenario so hostile for tech consumers, the brand makes it clear that financial accessibility has become a thing of the past.
