Microsoft and AMD are working together on the new next-generation Xbox consoles

Microsoft announced a strategic partnership with AMD for the development of its next line of Xbox devices, including consoles and possible portable models. The revelation was made during the Microsoft Build 2025 event, with a focus on gaming hardware. The new portfolio promises full backward compatibility with current platform games.

The announcement confirms what previous rumors already pointed out: the next generation of Xbox will maintain backward compatibility, a differential that Microsoft has been reinforcing since the Xbox One cycle and continues in the Xbox Series X|S. The idea is that any new device in the Xbox family can run existing games without the need for remastering or specific versions.

AMD, a long-time partner of Microsoft's gaming division, will be responsible for providing CPU and GPU solutions. Pavan Davuluri, an executive at Microsoft, described the project as a "dream team partnership," highlighting the intention to explore the full potential of the new generations of Ryzen processors and RDNA graphics cards.

"We are committed to offering the best gaming experience on multiple devices and formats, with full backward compatibility and next-generation performance," declared Davuluri during the presentation.

The statement did not detail technical specifications or release dates. However, internal sources claim that the project includes a variety of formats, including fixed consoles and at least one portable model focused on streaming and native games, following the trend started by devices like the ROG Ally from Asus and the Steam Deck from Valve.

Microsoft's move also comes at a time of strategic change for Xbox, with a greater focus on services and multiplatform. The release of exclusive games on the PlayStation 5, such as Sea of Thieves, already indicated an internal restructuring. This new generation of devices seems to follow the same path: greater reach and flexibility for the user.

The company promised to reveal more details still in 2025, during year-end events. Until then, the future of Xbox becomes increasingly tied to the concept of a unified ecosystem, regardless of hardware format.
