First version of the character has entered the public domain
After Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain and became a horror film, it's now Mickey Mouse's turn, specifically his first version, to enter the public domain and become something eerie.
Behind this is Nightmare Forge Games, which is developing Infestation: Origins, or Infestation 88 as it appears in some places.
The game will be a cooperative survival horror title with different episodes for up to four people. And of course, what catches attention in the released information is not the rats that seem to be an evolved version of those we know but rather our beloved Mickey Mouse in a rather spooky version.
In Infestation: Origins, what initially seemed like a worm outbreak reveals itself to be something more sinister. You and your friends are exterminators tasked with dealing with mysterious infestations. Play in public or private lobbies, using voice communication and team strategies.
Explore unique locations, uncover the history of infestations, and find ways to access new areas. Utilize extermination equipment to eradicate nests and monsters, running, hiding, and collaborating to prevent the spread.
Each episode features a horrifying entity, providing replayability with random layouts, unpredictable AI, and progression through experience, unlockable skins, and items.
What do you mean by public domain?
Only the 1928 released version of Mickey Mouse has entered the public domain, the one that appears in the animated short film Steamboat Willie and that you have probably seen.
Last year, this happened with Winnie the Pooh, which received a slasher horror film called Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, which was poorly reviewed but is expected to receive a sequel.
Works like Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain due to United States laws, where works enter the public domain after 95 years from their original publication.
The Mickey as we know him today, the cute and adorable version that is the face of Disney, still belongs to them; only this old version is in the public domain. This applies to other characters from that era, such as Minnie Mouse and Pete.
Still, many question whether this project will actually move forward, as there is not much information about the responsible studio, which does not post content on its social media.
Infestation: Origins is set to arrive in Early Access on PC sometime in 2024 and already has a page on Steam.
