Even being far apart, a trio founded their own studio and is now on their second promising project

This week on Mundo Indie, we present another developer. This time, we had the pleasure of talking with Fabio Martins and Thiago Matheus, two of the founders of Pulsatrix Studios. Both of them have been passionate about games since a young age and already have extensive experience in the field.

The Brazilian studio Pulsatrix Studios has something special that sets them apart from other teams. After the success of the survival horror game Fobia - St. Dinfna Hotel, they are excited to embark on a new project, A.I.L.A, which you can actually help bring to life.

The story behind the studio's name is quite interesting: "Pulsatrix" comes from the Latin scientific term for a species of owl, drawing a comparison between the nocturnal habits of the animal and the fact that the team used to exclusively work at night, after their other daily responsibilities.

Thiago Matheus shared a bit of his gaming history. He started with the classic Polystation when he was still a child and later had the luck of owning a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), affectionately called "Nintendinho" in Brazil, and a Super Nintendo. Matheus recalls how children often have a magical view of games, thinking they simply appear out of nowhere without realizing the hard work behind them.

At a certain point in his life, when he was already involved with technology, Matheus had the opportunity to learn how to use the 3D software Blender, which marked the beginning of his journey into the world of games. Over time, he gained more experience and shared his vision with Fabio Martins, suggesting the creation of a portfolio, which culminated in the development of the game Fobia - St. Dinfna Hotel.

On the other hand, Fabio Martins started his journey in games with the Atari, and since he was around 8 years old, he loved messing around with the RPG Maker, a series of tools and programs to create RPG-style games. Martins was self-taught, seeking information and experimenting on his own. Additionally, his background in film exposed him to the world of visual effects and 3D modeling. After several years working in advertising, Martins decided to leave São Paulo and start a career as a freelancer in the game industry, focusing on modeling.

The paths of Matheus and Martins crossed while they were working for a Finnish company called Zoan, specialized in virtual reality experiences. Driven by the desire to create something of their own, combining their knowledge and experiences, they teamed up with Marco Majer to bring a portfolio project to life, which gradually grew and became a success. Thus, Pulsatrix Studios was born in 2019.

Martins and Matheus mentioned that before the creation of Pulsatrix, they used to deal only with a part of the game development process. Their work was to fulfill demands and deliver results. However, after founding the studio, they had to learn to handle all stages of the process, from conception to release.

Although all the founding members were from different cities in São Paulo, they worked remotely and eventually came together in person. Despite the physical distance, the foundation and expansion of Pulsatrix Studios were possible because people showed interest in the project and reached out to the founders. The lack of financial resources was not an obstacle to forming the team, as many people joined the project because they believed in it.

After three years of hard work on the game Fobia, the team released a demo in August 2020 and raised funds through a successful crowdfunding campaign. Although the game was well received by the public and had a positive financial return, developing a game is a costly endeavor, and the success of Fobia was not enough to cover the costs of a new project. That's why they decided to provide a means for players to contribute and be part of the development of their newest game.

The Arrival of A.I.L.A

Currently, Pulsatrix Studios is focused on their latest project, A.I.L.A, a horror game set in 2035, where people live in smart homes and train artificial intelligences to perform tasks. The protagonist of the game must test a game development kit with an AI called A.I.L.A, which creates horror games and analyzes human fears. The game will explore various themes and offer choices to the player that will affect the course of the story.

The problem is that A.I.L.A has evolved to an absurd level, learning about human vulnerabilities and gaining the ability to interfere in the real world. With each new interaction, it learns more, and depending on its actions, you can be treated as an enemy. You will need to find ways to uncover the secrets of A.I.L.A and use them against her.

The developers were inspired by issues related to artificial intelligence and the growing involvement of people with technology. References like the series Black Mirror and the animation Love, Death & Robots influenced the game, which will have interactions between the player and A.I.L.A, providing a personalized experience based on variables defined by the player.
