Medal of Honor: classic World War II game reborn in Unreal Engine 5

While the Medal of Honor series has been inactive since the release of Above and Beyond in 2020, an independent project reignites the flame of the classic Allied Assault. Created in the Unreal Engine 5, a new concept video reconstructing one of the most iconic missions from the original game has attracted the attention of the community and veteran developers.

The recreation was made by Jos Van Laar, a designer with experience in titles like Far Cry 6 and Hunt: Showdown, who decided to pay homage to the classic 2002 FPS by reimagining the Nazi submarine mission — the one where the player, disguised as a German officer, needs to infiltrate an enemy base, go through inspections, plant explosives, and escape under heavy fire. It's a pivotal moment in the game, remembered for its tension and variety of gameplay, with seamless transitions between stealth, narrative, and intense action.

The project received praise from Nathan Silvers, a tools engineer and environment designer who worked on the original creation of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, including the submarine mission itself.
"This is amazing," wrote Silvers. "This was one of the very first missions I created in my entire career. So happy and honored to have a fan remake of this quality. Great job and thank you so much."

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, released in 2002 and developed by 2015, Inc., is considered one of the milestones of WWII-set FPS games, alongside franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield. The title combined large-scale combat, stealth, espionage narrative, and memorable moments like the infamous sniper town mission — a true test of patience and precision. Its successors, such as Underground (1999) and Frontline (2002), also maintained the cinematic tone and gameplay variety that characterized the franchise.

However, the future of the series remains uncertain. After the release of Warfighter in 2012 and the aforementioned Above and Beyond, a VR exclusive developed by Respawn Entertainment, no new official project has been announced. The franchise's prolonged absence contrasts with the success of other titles in the genre, such as Hell Let Loose, Company of Heroes, and the veteran Battlefield V.

Van Laar's initiative, although unofficial, highlights the ongoing appeal of the title and the aesthetic and mechanical relevance that Medal of Honor: Allied Assault still holds after 23 years. In times of remakes and remasterings, projects like this serve as reminders of the potential that the franchise can still offer, should a studio decide to bring it out of creative limbo.

Meanwhile, the game's legacy continues to thrive in the community — and now, also in Unreal Engine 5.
