Mass Effect 5 has enough team? EA responds to concerns about BioWare
In the backstage of BioWare, big changes have been happening, raising doubts about the future of Mass Effect 5. After a series of layoffs and employee relocations, the studio now has less than 100 developers, less than half of what it had in 2022. The situation has generated concern in the community, but Electronic Arts (EA) ensures that the remaining team is sufficient for the project.
Dragon Age First, Mass Effect Later
According to a spokesperson from EA, BioWare's focus in recent years has always been Dragon Age: The Veilguard, leaving only a smaller group working on the initial vision of the new Mass Effect. Now that The Veilguard has been released, the studio can fully focus on the anticipated space sequel.
"The studio's priority was Dragon Age. During this time, some people continued to build the vision for the next Mass Effect. Now that The Veilguard has been released, the studio's full focus is on Mass Effect."
However, EA avoided going into detail about specific team numbers or whether there will be new hires for the project.
While the company claims to have the right professionals for development, information from Bloomberg indicates that many relocations within EA are not temporary, but permanent. BioWare has been facing cuts since 2023, when it laid off employees and ended partnerships with studios like Keywords, which assisted in the production of Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
With the reduced team, the concern is: will BioWare be able to deliver a Mass Effect that meets expectations? Since the controversial release of Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017, fans have been awaiting a triumphant return of the franchise.
EA ensures that, despite internal changes, the game is still in development and the studio is "on the right track." However, without a clear schedule and few details disclosed, we must wait and see if Mass Effect 5 will be able to revive the series' prestige.
With so many challenges, the question remains: do you still trust BioWare to deliver a new Mass Effect worthy of the franchise?
