Mafia World: Mafia games, inspired by movies!

Liked by 0 people

The subgenre of mafia movies may have lost a bit of its charm over time, perhaps because of so many similar movies, which usually diminish the quality of a style, genre, or even a thought. Of course, it's not because at some point we had so many similar stories that they lost their charm, or that the best ones lost their touch for writing, because "The Irishman" goes totally against the grain, showing that Scorsese never lost his touch for doing this.

With this idea, today's thematic list (mainly to remember) will be about mafia games, violence, money, and betrayals. All of them bringing their own stories, some having their fame for a long time, others being a little less known, and even adaptations of great movies. Still worth taking a look at each of them, just out of curiosity!

This list is not as important as the others, since here I want to list some games that are very likely no longer for sale. So part of this is just an exercise in curiosity!

  1. Mafia: Definitive Edition - We couldn't not start with it, since Mafia was a giant of the PlayStation 2 era, bringing an incredible story. Mafia: Definitive Edition was released by 2K Games in 2020 and is the remake of the first title in the saga, released in 2002. MDE manages to improve absolutely everything that the original brought, but still maintaining the essence and all the factors that made the saga the success it is. In the story, we control Thomas Angelo, a regular taxi driver in the fictional city of Lost Heaven who, one night, finds himself an accomplice to a mafia family in a police chase. As a result, the protagonist receives an invitation to join the Salieri family in order to grow within the organization and gain respect from members and rivals. The title is available for PC, PlayStation 4 (PS4), and Xbox One.

  2. L.A. Noire - Released by Rockstar Games in 2011, L.A. Noire brings a slightly different dynamic. Here, we control a policeman who needs to search for clues, follow leads, and interrogate suspects to solve crimes. When released, the title brought a great innovation for the time: the possibility of playing it entirely in black and white, like a classic noir film. The plot, set in 1947 Los Angeles, features protagonist Cole Phelps, a police officer tasked with solving criminal cases in five divisions of the city. The story and setting draw heavily from film productions of the 1940s and 1950s. The game is available for PlayStation 3 (PS3), PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

  3. The Godfather: The Game - One of the greatest classics in cinema history received a videogame adaptation in 2006, appealing to many fans and receiving critical acclaim. The Godfather was released by EA. Although very faithful to the film, the game has a quite different story, but still makes references to the movie. In the game, the main character is Aldo Trapani, whose father was murdered on behalf of Don Corleone, head of the Barzini family, when he was still a boy. Overall, the game puts us in a very fun open world to explore, bringing strong elements from cinema while adapting them excellently for videogames. Currently available for Windows, PlayStation 2 (PS2), Xbox, PSP, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Mobile.

  4. Scarface: The World is Yours - Released in 2007, it is another game based on cinematic plots. Inspired by the 1983 American film of the same name, the game from Radical Entertainment was very well received and brings a fun and nostalgic gameplay. In the story, we see an alternative timeline. Thus, we take control of Tony Montana in the final scene of the film, when his mansion is invaded by Sosa's hitmen. Tony ends up eliminating the soldiers, but his house and cocaine empire are destroyed. Soon, the protagonist declares vengeance and swears to do anything to take down the enemy.

  5. Yakuza Kiwami - This one is a remake of the first game in the franchise, originally released in 2005. Like the Mafia remake, the title manages to elevate practically everything from the first game, improving graphics and gameplay style. In the story, we take on the role of Kazuma Kiryu, a yakuza whose life is transformed when his boss, Sohei Dojima, tries to rape Kiryu's childhood friend, Yumi Sawamura. Dojima is then killed and Kiryu is imprisoned after taking the blame. After being released, he must rebuild himself in a Japan overrun by organized crime. The game was originally released for PS2 and later came to PS3 and Wii U, while its remake was released in 2016 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
