Mafia: The Old Country receives trailers and official release date
A 2K and Hangar 13 have released today, May 6, two new trailers of Mafia: The Old Country, a new chapter in the classic franchise that debuted in 2002. The title will be officially released on August 8, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (via Steam), with pre-order already available in two editions.
Running on Unreal Engine 5, the game marks the return of the series after a prolonged hiatus and promises a more cinematic and linear approach, focusing on narrative and historical fidelity. The first video, titled "Whatever It Takes", is a trailer with in-engine captured scenes, revealing gameplay elements, while the second one, "Breaking Omerta", presents behind-the-scenes and insights from the development team.
In the gameplay, Mafia: The Old Country moves away from the traditional urban maps of the series, opting for a rural setting in an early 1900s Sicily, which resulted in inevitable comparisons with Red Dead Redemption. The setting includes use of horses, period vehicles, classic weaponry, and stealth mechanics — all wrapped in a more contained design, without open world.
“Mafia: The Old Country is a linear and focused experience that combines quality narrative, authentic period immersion, and a refined version of the franchise's classic gameplay,” said Nick Baynes, president of Hangar 13.
“This approach allows us to deliver an intense, brutal, emotional, and grounded story. Set in early 20th century Sicily, the game follows our protagonist, Enzo Favara, as he takes an oath and climbs the ranks of Don Torrisi's crime family.”
The game will be sold in two editions:
Standard Edition – Includes the base game for $49.99.
Deluxe Edition – Costs $59.99 and includes various extra contents:
Padrino Pack: Lupara Speciale (shotgun), Vendetti Speciale (revolver), Immortale (pendant), Padrino outfit, Stiletto Speciale (knife), Eckhart Speciale limousine, and Cosimo horse with accessories.
Gatto Nero Pack: Bodeo Nero pistol, Velocità pendant, Gatto Nero racing outfit, and Carozella Nero car.
Digital bonuses: original soundtrack and digital artbook with conceptual art and development notes.
The developer panel will be live streamed today at 2 p.m. (Brasília time) during PAX East, on 2K's official YouTube and Twitch channels. It's worth noting that Hangar 13, after ups and downs in the market — such as the cancellation of a AAA project in 2022 —, is now looking to regain players' trust with a more precise and historically rich delivery.
Mafia: The Old Country not only aims to tell an origin story for the Sicilian mafia, but also to reposition the franchise at a time when the narrative genre needs to reinvent itself without resorting to repetitive formulas.
