Kratos on Xbox? The unusual metroidvania of God of War

The wall of exclusivity of Sony seems to have more cracks than usual. Sources that rarely miss the mark, like NateTheHate and Jeff Grubb, indicate that the secret project of a God of War in a 2.5D metroidvania format should make an appearance in today's State of Play. Honestly, the idea of seeing the Ghost of Sparta jumping platforms in 2D is interesting, but the real bombshell is that this title may break the taboo and land on the Xbox Series and the successor to the Nintendo Switch. If Sony really goes down this path, the question arises whether exclusive brands still hold the same weight as before or if they have become mere assets to plug financial holes.

The development would be in the hands of Mega Cat Studios, under the watchful eye of Sony Santa Monica, which at least ensures that the combat is not a complete disappointment. According to Grubb, the game is "basically God of War mixed with Blasphemous" and would function as a prequel, focusing on the period when Kratos was still a mere mortal trying to survive the chaos. It's a curious genre choice, since turning an epic action franchise into a side-scrolling exploration game may not please those who expect the grand scale of the main titles, but at least it tries something different from the corporate staple.

The strategy of releasing smaller games on multiple platforms is not exactly unprecedented for the company, given what happened with LEGO Horizon Adventures. However, seeing the God of War brand on Microsoft or Nintendo hardware still sounds like a delusion to the more conservative fans. NateTheHate reinforces that, since 2025, the project has been internally treated as multiplatform.

If the release is indeed imminent, as rumors suggest, Sony is about to test how much the strength of a name like Kratos can carry a smaller-scale project on rival territories. In the end, if the game is good, it doesn't matter where it runs, but it's hard not to feel that we are witnessing the beginning of a new — and perhaps strange — era for the PlayStation ecosystem.
