The publisher Krafton, in partnership with the developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment, is actively involved in the development of Subnautica 2, with a planned release later this year for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.

The sequel was confirmed in a recent financial profit report for 2023, which revealed the publisher's plans for 2024, including a specific mention of Subnautica 2. According to the report, the game will be released with the Game as a Service (GaaS) model, supporting up to 4 players and developed with the Unreal Engine 5.

Players will have the opportunity to explore a "oceanic world in stunning stylized graphics," as detailed in the report. Subnautica 2 will offer a single-player mode, as well as options to play cooperatively with up to 4 friends, while uncovering the mysteries of a new alien planet.

Although details about the game are still scarce and there are no screenshots or gameplay images available, the report indicates that more information will be revealed soon through an official announcement.

Since its release in 2015, the original Subnautica has maintained a robust community of players, with a peak concurrent player base of 51,156 on Steam.

The popularity of the game has grown over the years, culminating in the release of a new installment in the franchise, Subnautica: Below Zero, although this is more considered as a DLC or expansion rather than a direct sequel.
