Kieron Gillen takes on the scripts for Marvel Tōkon
The initial roster of the fighting game offers a diverse selection for battles, totaling 20 confirmed combatants who will clash in 6 distinctive arenas. The lineup of heroes and villains includes figures such as:
Storm, Magik, Wolverine, Danger, Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, Peni Parker, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Hulk, Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin, Carnage, Ghost Rider, Blade, Deadpool, and Loki.
The impressive lineup behind the scenes revealed that the responsibility for the narrative campaign was given to the award-winning writer Kieron Gillen. This professional took on the development of the so-called "Episode Mode," which will be divided into 5 distinct storylines. The central premise of the scripts revolves around a mystical and legendary entity that travels across different planets within the cosmos with the sole aim of testing the strength and challenging the native warriors of each biome. Having an experienced comic writer handling the storyline of a fighting game is a huge plus, ensuring that the interactions between the characters have that classic comic signature we love, rather than empty and generic dialogues.
The project was born from a direct cooperation between the publisher PlayStation, the fighting game specialists at Arc System Works, and the team at Marvel Games. The result of this partnership, named Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, is scheduled to premiere on systems on August 6. To counter public skepticism, already tired of empty promises, the involved studios have released a detailed preview of the campaign scenes, a smart strategy to prove that the single-player content received the necessary investment and attention before the launch.
Although the title is being classified by Sony's management as a service game focused on competitive online gameplay, the presence of a robust single-player campaign provides great comfort for those who prefer to enjoy the game at their own pace.
This dynamic market structure means that the August launch is merely the foundational phase of the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls ecosystem, which begins with a planned schedule for regular releases of extra packages and seasonal passes sold separately. This insistence on dividing the product into paid expansions from day one somewhat dampens the enthusiasm, but the presence of this story mode, penned by a respected author, at least serves as a solid promise of entertainment before the inevitable flood of mandatory microtransactions takes over the servers.
