Kadokawa Corporation acquires Japanese studio Acquire, developer of Octopath Traveler and Tenchu.
A Kadokawa Corporation, a media group and majority shareholder of FromSoftware, has completed the acquisition of the renowned Japanese development studio Acquire. Known for titles such as Octopath Traveler and Tenchu, the studio was founded in 1994 and currently has 148 employees, according to information available on its website. The value of the transaction was not disclosed.
In an official statement, Kadokawa announced the transformation of Acquire Corp. into a wholly-owned subsidiary as part of its business strategy to strengthen the intellectual property creation capabilities in games.
The company emphasized its intention to generate synergies with its existing subsidiaries in the gaming segment, enhance planning and development capabilities throughout the group, and improve its console gaming lineup.
Acquire, responsible for the development of the acclaimed Octopath Traveler series in partnership with Square Enix, has a successful track record with titles that have sold millions of units. The acquisition aims to further boost Kadokawa's position in the gaming market.
During a results presentation, Kadokawa also briefly addressed the highly anticipated expansion of Elden Ring, titled Shadow of the Erdtree, stating:
"We are currently working intensively on the DLC development for Elden Ring, but we have not yet announced a release date at this time."
