Infestation: Origins - game developer of Mickey's horror game changes name after controversy

The Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse, recently made public domain, has led to unexpected situations, including his involvement in horror films and a horror game called Infestation 88.

However, the developer Nightmare Forge Games has decided to change the game's name after allegations that the term referenced neo-Nazi ideologies.

The company released a statement explaining the original choice of the name:
 

"Our game 'Infestation 88' is set in the 1980s, with the year 1988 chosen due to its symmetrical design in the game's art/logo. Unfortunately, we were unaware of any additional meanings the number '88' carries. However, after learning about it, we are changing the game's name to 'Infestation: Origins.' We apologize for our ignorance on this matter and appreciate that it has been brought to our attention so we could address it as quickly as possible!"

The horror title has already been updated on Steam and is available for wishlisting, although there is still no confirmed release date with a window set for 2024.
