Immediate success of Atomfall leads Rebellion to plan a sequel
After the release of Atomfall in March 2025, the developer Rebellion is already internally discussing the possibility of a sequel, as revealed by CEO Jason Kingsley in an interview with The Game Business. The game, which became the studio's biggest launch in history, was described as "immediately profitable", highlighting significant commercial performance in both direct sales and its presence on Game Pass.
Positive critical reception and expanded reach through Microsoft's subscription service contributed to the success of the title, but the studio's statement suggests that Atomfall also performed well in the traditional sales model. The game now joins the studio's established franchises like Sniper Elite and Zombie Army.
During the conversation, Kingsley shared that there is already additional content (DLC) in development and raised strategic questions about the next steps for the intellectual property:
"What do we do in the future with Atomfall? We have DLCs coming... And what about sequels? Do we make spin-offs?"
The executive also emphasized the importance of balancing established IPs with new creations:
"We need to maintain a balance between sequels and original things. At the end of the day, we want to make quality content that entertains people and makes them come back. If someone buys one of our games, I want them to think: 'that was worth it, what else do they have in the library?'"
Rebellion has not officially confirmed Atomfall 2 yet, but the statements indicate that the franchise is being treated as a new pillar of the company. Considering the studio's history with Sniper Elite, which generated five main titles and several spin-offs, it is conceivable that Atomfall will follow the same path.
Atomfall, an action and survival game set in an alternate Britain after a nuclear disaster in the 1950s, caught attention for its dense setting, non-linear narrative, and exploration and combat mechanics. Developed on the Asura Engine, the same engine used in other titles from the studio, the game marked a notable technical advancement for the studio.
With confirmed success and ongoing discussions about the future, Rebellion seems poised to turn Atomfall into one of its biggest brands - a rarity in times when new IPs struggle to establish themselves in the market.
