Horizon Franchise Surpasses 38 Million Units Sold
The Horizon franchise, from Guerrilla Games, has reached a new milestone with over 38 million units sold globally. The information was revealed by Sony during a legal process filed against Tencent for alleged copying of Horizon's IP.
The last official update on Horizon sales had been in April 2023, when Sony announced 32.7 million units sold. This means that, in the last two years, the franchise added approximately 5 million copies to its total. This growth was driven by recent releases, such as the remaster of Horizon Zero Dawn, the arrival of Horizon Forbidden West on PC, and the family-friendly spin-off LEGO Horizon Adventures.
With this new milestone, Horizon solidifies itself as one of the most successful franchises in the PlayStation catalog, joining other giants like:
- Gran Turismo: over 90 million
- God of War: above 66 million
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: over 50 million
- The Last of Us: which recently surpassed 37 million
Attempted Acquisition by Tencent and Future of the Franchise
The legal process also brought an interesting revelation to light: at some point, Tencent allegedly tried to officially acquire the rights to the Horizon series' intellectual property, but without success. As the legal case continues, fans eagerly await news about the franchise in the coming years, whether in the form of new games or the television adaptation that is currently in production by Netflix.
With the continuous growth and success of Horizon in the PlayStation catalog, what do you believe is the next big step for the franchise, considering both new games and the Netflix adaptation?
