Hogwarts Legacy 2: vague indicates a focus on multiplayer
Avalanche Software is shaking up the market with new hires that suggest drastic changes for the sequel to their biggest success. The studio recently posted a job opening for a Senior Software Engineer who will work on a "new online multiplayer RPG." According to the technical description identified by Game Rant, the professional will be responsible for "matchmaking," "lobbies," and server infrastructure. The job listing explicitly states that the hired individual will be part of the team behind the "blockbuster open-world action RPG Hogwarts Legacy," directly linking the project to the franchise.
This move signals a promising technical direction for those looking to explore the Wizarding World with friends. The implementation of scalable "backend" services may allow the new title to support an active community continuously, something that fans felt was missing in the original 2023 game. Warner Bros. Discovery had already stated in 2024, through JB Perrette, that transforming their major properties into services "where people can live, work, build, and play continuously" is a strategic priority.
On the other hand, Warner Bros.' insistence on "live service" elements is a cause for strong concern. Even after the critical failures of titles like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights, the company seems to overlook that the success of Hogwarts Legacy (which sold over 34 million copies by the end of 2024 and reached 40 million by December 2025) was due to its single-player focused experience. It is regrettable that a functional formula is at risk of being diluted by aggressive monetization mechanics and constant connection demands, just to meet recurring revenue goals.
Although journalist Jason Schreier previously stated that the sequel would not be a live service game, the indications of online infrastructure suggest that, at the very least, there will be a change in the project's scope. Avalanche Software has not yet confirmed whether the multiplayer will be a separate mode or if the main game will be transformed into a shared experience. The project, which remains a top priority for Warner, is expected to be released between 2026 and 2027, possibly coordinated with the premiere of the new Harry Potter series on HBO.
