Director provokes Phil Spencer and reignites fans' hope

Scalebound, one of PlatinumGames' most ambitious projects, had one of the most painful cancellations of the last decade. Announced in 2014, the game promised epic battles between dragons and innovative cooperative gameplay, but ended up being discontinued in 2017 by Microsoft. Since then, the possibility of a comeback has always been a distant dream for fans... until now.

Legendary director Hideki Kamiya, who left PlatinumGames in 2023 to found his own studio, CloverWorks, reignited the hype by posting a video where he watches the original trailer of Scalebound and comments on his desire to bring the game back.

Kamiya sends message to Phil Spencer

The official CloverWorks account shared the scene directly from Kamiya's office, highlighting how proud the director still feels about the game:

"Today at Clovers. Noticed some excitement around Kamiya’s desk... He was reminiscing about the development of Scalebound while watching YouTube videos. It never made it to release, but even now, he still feels proud of it."

But the most striking moment came shortly after. Kamiya himself responded to the post, tagging Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, and writing a direct message:

"Let’s do it, Phil."

It was enough to set social media on fire, with players speculating about a possible revival of the game.

What could happen now?

The possibility of Scalebound being resumed still seems remote. Microsoft owns the IP rights, and the game's cancellation at the time would have been due to technical and strategic difficulties. However, Kamiya's recent involvement in the development of Okami 2, in partnership with Capcom, shows that old projects can indeed get a new chance.

With Microsoft investing in new acquisitions and seeking to expand its lineup of exclusives, a reapproach with Kamiya and his new company CloverWorks could be an interesting move. After all, the action and fantasy market has always had room for a well-executed dragon game.

Could Scalebound still rise from the ashes? If Kamiya's will is anything to go by, the flame continues to burn.
