Hello Studios experiences layoffs following new release
Punishing developers with job losses right after successful project launches exposes the predatory and unsustainable model adopted by large corporations in the gaming industry. Just over a week after releasing the anticipated Halo: Campaign Evolved to the market, Halo Studios faced another wave of layoffs, as reported by the professionals themselves on professional networks.
Producer Nick Treitman expressed his disappointment on LinkedIn regarding his departure after six and a half years with the company, while Paul Morris, who worked in internal process management, also confirmed his exit from the company shortly after the production's debut.
This new series of dismissals reflects the direct outcomes of the restructuring carried out by Microsoft, which recently announced the elimination of 3,200 positions in its gaming divisions.
With half of the planned layoffs set to occur intermittently throughout the fiscal year, entire Xbox teams remain in a state of constant job insecurity.
Estimates by Alinea Analytics suggest that the revamped classic sold around 212,000 copies on Steam, 900,000 units within the Xbox ecosystem, and approximately 351,000 licenses on PlayStation, a commercial performance also affected by the game's direct availability in the Game Pass library.
Despite the positive reception from specialized critics and the public, Microsoft did not respond to requests for an official statement regarding the exact number of those affected.
Laying off talent at the precise moment when a project achieves good technical and commercial success sends a disheartening message about the prioritization of immediate financial margins over human stability in studios.
