Helldivers 2 takes urban combat to Super Earth with new update

Arrowhead Game Studios has released the Heart of Democracy update for Helldivers 2, bringing direct combat to the cities of Super Earth, the players' faction's homeland. Now, the Enlightened not only threaten remote colonial systems, but advance on densely populated urban centers, forcing resistance to a new level of tactical complexity and narrative consequences.

The new urban biome puts players on defense and counterattack missions amid skyscrapers, narrow streets, and at-risk civilian areas. This change of scenery directly impacts the planetary campaigns: the recovery of urban areas now influences the progress of the entire intergalactic conflict, in a system of sectoral tug-of-war.

Among the new features, the update brings SEAF troops (Super Earth Armed Forces), which emerge as dynamic reinforcements in the field. They operate autonomously or follow players' commands, serving as tactical support in specific missions. The presence of these soldiers becomes essential in the face of the advancement of new enemy variants, such as the Crescent Supervisor and the gigantic Carnemonte, recently introduced.

Combat mechanics have also received attention. Weapon customization has been expanded, allowing detailed adjustments to primary armament, and new Planetary Defense Cannons can be activated in certain missions, offering heavy strategic support against enemy ships.

"Even in the face of such danger, not all is lost, for we are not defenseless. The power of Super Earth's arsenal lies beneath our peaceful and democratic streets," says the Arrowhead statement.

Interaction with civilians, however, adds a layer of risk. During operations in urban areas, friendly fire resulting in civilian deaths will result in penalties. The penal system reinforces the role of Helldivers as defenders of order and democracy, even amid chaos.

"Helldivers, it is your sacred duty to keep these citizens safe: despite the panic, they trust in your role as the supreme protectors of Freedom," highlights the developer.

The update is free but requires an internet connection and the base game Helldivers 2, available exclusively for PC and PlayStation 5. The title was released in February 2024 and has since received a series of substantial updates, including new weapons, classes, and enemy threats emerging from the singularity.

The battle for Super Earth is now domestic. Players must enlist and adapt their strategies — because the war is now at home.
