GTA VI must run at 30 FPS on consoles, says former Rockstar Animator
The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI has the potential to generate more than US$ 3 billion in its first year, but a question persists among players: will the game run at 60 FPS on consoles or will it be limited to 30 FPS?
According to Mike York, former animator at Rockstar Games, the expectation is that the title will run at 30 FPS at launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. He believes that Rockstar will prioritize stability and graphic fidelity, optimizing the game to maintain smooth performance without dropping below 30 FPS.
"I don't know if they will be able to reach 60 FPS," said York. "I think they will aim for locked 30 FPS, ensuring that performance does not drop below that. It may even reach 40, 41 or 52 FPS at times, but it will be a game designed for 30."
He also commented on the possibility of a more optimized PC version in the future:
"When it comes out for PC, the game will probably be improved, with support for new graphics cards and optimizations that could allow for 60 FPS."
York speculated that only with AI upscaling technologies, like those that can be implemented on the PS5 Pro, will it be possible to achieve 60 FPS on consoles.
“I don't think the game will achieve pure 60 FPS on the base PS5. Maybe on the PS5 Pro, but even then, I don't believe it will be native.”
Although Mike York has worked on successes like GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, he left Rockstar Games in 2017 and does not have direct information about the final version of GTA VI. However, he highlights that the developer always extracts the most from each hardware before optimizing for 60 FPS.
Grand Theft Auto VI will be released later this year for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Do you think Rockstar will keep the game at 30 FPS or could surprise with a 60 FPS mode? Share your opinion!
