Gregg Mayles, Rare's legend, ends 36-year career after cancellation
The veteran Gregg Mayles, one of the most important figures at Rare, announced his departure from the studio after 36 years of work. The announcement, made by himself on social media, marks the end of an era for Rare, the company he helped shape with his creativity and humor.
The most positive aspect is the immeasurable legacy that Mayles leaves for the games industry. He began working at Rare back in the 80s and contributed to around 30 games throughout his career. The creator was a director or designer of classics that defined consoles, including Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, and Banjo-Tooie on the Nintendo 64. Later, he was also involved in projects like Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Viva Piñata, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, and, most recently, served as creative director of Sea of Thieves. His first game at Rare was Solar Jetman in 1990.
In his farewell message, Mayles thanked all the fans and colleagues:
“today was my last day at Rare”.
“Thank you to everyone who played and loved.”
He even included “one last rhyme”, a touch that recalls the humor present in his games.
The critical side of the news is the context in which this departure occurs. Gregg Mayles was working on the Everwild project, which unfortunately was cancelled amidst cuts and changes at Rare. The departure of a 36-year veteran right after the cancellation of his project and during a time of restructuring at Xbox Game Studios is an indicator of instability.
The departure of Gregg Mayles, after 36 years at Rare and involvement in classics like Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie, marks the end of an era for the studio. The veteran, who was creative director of Sea of Thieves, leaves the company after the cancellation of the Everwild project and amidst internal cuts.
