Glen Schofield announces retirement from the gaming industry
During the filming of his farewell, the veteran insisted on sharing a valuable piece of advice specifically targeted at the new generation of programmers and creators entering the field now. He stressed that the original concept and creative vision will always remain the most essential gears in the development of any interactive project, regardless of the immense turbulences, large-scale layoffs, and financial challenges currently strangling the market. It's an important lesson from someone knowledgeable, reminding us that the core of games lies in passion and innovation, not merely in financial reports and shareholder pressures that often ruin good ideas.
Through a very personal video statement published on his corporate network profile LinkedIn, the legendary designer announced that he is stepping away from daily development work to enjoy his well-deserved retirement. He bids farewell to the screens after accruing 35 years of a brilliant trajectory in the digital entertainment industry, a period in which he helped shape the portfolio of several gigantic market brands. In his speech, the creator expressed deep gratitude to his former teammates, family, and the global community of players who supported his journey by consuming his works over the last three decades.
"The idea will always remain the most important element," highlighted the producer as he reflected on the current creative process.
The professional held significant leadership positions at influential corporations like Electronic Arts and Crystal Dynamics. However, his ultimate recognition by the public and specialized critics occurred under the banner of the now-defunct Visceral Games, where he led the creation of the first Dead Space, a masterpiece of survival horror and science fiction that became a foundational pillar and the ultimate reference for the horror genre. It's sad to note that brilliant minds like his are withdrawing from active development, but the legacy he leaves on our consoles is simply indisputable and will continue to inspire creators for a long time.
Years later, he joined forces with business partner Michael Condrey to found Sledgehammer Games under the umbrella of Activision, taking a leadership role in producing grandiose titles in the military shooter franchise, such as Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Call of Duty: WWII. His last direct contribution to the gaming industry was the dark The Callisto Protocol, an action and survival horror project funded by the publisher Krafton and produced at Striking Distance Studios, another development house he helped build from scratch. Although his most recent project divided opinions and didn't achieve the same brilliance as his crowning achievement, the courage to keep trying to build new horror brands deserves all our respect and admiration.
