Germany Seeks High-Demand Talents for the Video Game Industry

Less than a week before the end of Gamescom, an attractive piece of news reaches Brazilian developers. Germany is actively searching for skilled professionals in the field of video games due to a shortage of talent, which has been impacting the competitiveness of this sector that comprises around 800 companies and employs about 12,000 people.

According to a survey conducted by the German Games Industry Association, the highest demand is for programmers, with nine out of ten companies actively seeking these professionals. Additionally, there is a shortage of art technicians, game designers, level/content designers, and game artists.

Felix Falk, a representative of the association, highlights that this scarcity of professionals is partly due to their migration to other industries or abroad. The gaming sector, like various other technology fields, has been affected by the lack of qualified workforce.

Although efforts are being made to attract specialists from outside the European Union to meet this demand, the bureaucracy involved in hiring remains a challenge for many companies.

Germany has recently passed a law to simplify the job market access for IT professionals from outside the EU, allowing them to work in the country based on relevant professional experience, even without German language proficiency or an academic degree. This makes job positions even more attractive.

The gaming market in Germany has been thriving, whether for computers, mobile devices, or consoles, and contributes a significant portion to the revenue and growth of both the development and entertainment sectors.

While few heavyweight names are present in the international market, such as Ubisoft, InnoGames, and Crytek, the country has been witnessing diversification with the expansion of independent studios, particularly in cities like Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich.

For those aiming to enter this field, numerous educational institutions offer technical or higher-level courses in game development. The shortage of qualified professionals is particularly felt in areas such as programming, game design, graphic art, and level design.

Among the most sought-after roles in the field are programmers with skills in application development and system integration, along with expertise in programming languages, game design, and artificial intelligence. Art technicians act as intermediaries between programmers and game artists, focusing on implementing graphical elements like lighting and animation.

Game designers conceptualize game mechanics, translating ideas into rules that shape the player's experience, while level and content designers create virtual worlds, considering visual, interactive, and narrative aspects. Lastly, game artists, responsible for visual aesthetics, craft realistic and convincing graphical elements, requiring skills in graphic design, illustration, and digital art.

The market welcomes professionals from diverse fields such as design, media, and computing. Employment opportunities are also open for professionals from related fields, like computer science and media design, as long as they possess relevant experience.
