Gearbox considers Borderlands 4 a $200 game, but the price is $70.
The CEO of Gearbox, Randy Pitchford, caused controversy by suggesting that the price of Borderlands 4 could be US$ 200. The game, which will be released on September 12 for US$ 70 in the United States, was defended by Pitchford as a high-value experience, despite the public's reaction.
In an interview with GamesRadar+ during Gamescom, Pitchford stated, "Honestly, I think they could charge US$ 200." He tried to soften the statement, adding: "But I wish it was free, so everyone could play. Of course, that's not how business works, but the value is there."
The executive also seemed indifferent to online discussions about game prices, saying that "they don't change anything in the end result," since players decide to purchase based on personal interest. For Pitchford, the game's value is "undeniable."
"Borderlands 4 is amazing, absolutely an incredible game, and the value is undeniable," he said. "We have fans who spend thousands of hours in the franchise. If you think about cost-effectiveness, it's hard to find better entertainment."
Despite the statement, Pitchford hinted that Borderlands 4 will have a large number of DLCs, mixing free and paid content. This shows that, even with a price of US$ 70, Gearbox intends to profit from additional content.
Randy Pitchford's statement that Borderlands 4 could cost US$ 200 sparked debates about the value of games. Do you think the justification of "cost-effectiveness" based on hours of gameplay is valid, or is the statement just a way to create controversy for the release?
