Future of The Last of Us Part III: Ideas Exist, But No Guarantees
The possibility of a third game in The Last of Us franchise remains uncertain, even though Neil Druckmann, creator of the series and co-showrunner of the HBO adaptation, already has concepts for a Part 3. Craig Mazin, writer and showrunner of the television series, revealed that Druckmann shared these ideas with him, but with no guarantee that they will materialize.
During a conversation with BAFTA about the second season of the TV series, Mazin indicated that Druckmann presented initial concepts for a possible new chapter in the saga. However, Mazin emphasized that no decision has been formally made. He also noted that Druckmann would be comfortable if the project does not move forward, reinforcing the hypothetical nature of The Last of Us Part III.
Mazin expressed his desire to see the story continue, but recognized that concluding the narrative in its current form may be a preferable option. He praised Naughty Dog, the developing studio, highlighting their ability to create projects considered artistically impressive, both in video games and television adaptations.
Currently, Naughty Dog is focused on the development of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a project in which Druckmann is directly involved. In previous statements, Druckmann indicated that this new game is being treated as if it were the last of his career. Although he does not rule out a return to The Last of Us, he does not count on this immediate possibility.
In addition to Intergalactic, Naughty Dog has a second game in development, details (name and content) of which are not publicly known. The uncertainty about the future of The Last of Us Part III will persist until a concrete decision is announced by the studio.
