Frostpunk 1886 will be remade in Unreal Engine 5 with mod support and a new Purpose path
The 11 bit studios confirmed the development of Frostpunk 1886, an expanded remake of the original 2018 title, scheduled for release in 2027. Based on Unreal Engine 5, the new version marks the end of the use of the old Liquid Engine, used in both the first Frostpunk and This War of Mine.
"Frostpunk 1886 - named in reference to the arrival of the Great Storm in New London - is not just a visual upgrade. The game expands the original with new content, laws, mechanics, and a new Path of Purpose," the studio highlighted in an official statement.
The setting remains a dystopia from the late nineteenth century, where players must build and manage a city during a global volcanic winter. The goal is to balance morality and survival in a tense narrative of difficult choices.
Among the technical novelties, Frostpunk 1886 will bring full support for mods, a feature widely requested by the community and previously unfeasible in the old engine. The new technological base will also allow for future updates and DLCs with greater flexibility.
Meanwhile, Frostpunk 2, released just over six months ago, will continue to receive free updates, DLCs, and will also be released for consoles. "Frostpunk 2 continues to evolve, now on a larger scale, more politically and socially complex than the first game."
The first version received a 9/10 rating on the same portal, with praise for its innovative combination of mechanics and themes. The remake aims to maintain this essence while expanding possibilities for new and old players.
The studio is also working on the release of The Alters, scheduled for June 2025, expanding the portfolio with immersive experiences in challenging worlds.
