In statements made to the MinnMax Podcast, the creator and former director of the Forza Horizon franchise, Mike Brown, provided a very sober — and critical — perspective on the commercial collapse of the Xbox Game Pass ecosystem. The developer considered that the original proposal was positive and focused on the audience, having injected mountains of money into the industry to acquire studios, finance bold projects, and create thousands of jobs around the world. However, the financial return in the spreadsheets simply did not add up.

The absence of a subscriber base willing to pay the necessary amounts to sustain these astronomical budgets ended up destabilizing the division. According to Mike Brown, the direct consequence of this unsustainable situation is the wave of mass layoffs and the sudden closing of creative teams.

For the creator, witnessing a well-intentioned idea collapse due to a lack of financial sustainability is a tragedy for those working in game development.

Now leading Maverick Games, where he is in charge of producing the open-world racing game Clutch, the developer looks at the situation with the insight of someone who has shifted to the independent scene. He emphasized that the service allowed for the creation of works that would never have gotten the green light in traditional formats, but noted that the lack of public support made the continuation of this dream model unviable.

Shaking the structure of dozens of studios by betting everything on a monetization format that proved unsustainable in the long run is a major strategic error by Xbox. Creating reliance on a cheap catalog is easy; the difficult part — and where the company failed miserably — is ensuring that the finances remain stable without having to sacrifice careers and shut doors along the way.
