Expedition 33 surpasses 2 million copies in 12 days
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, RPG developed by the French studio Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive, has surpassed the mark of 2 million copies sold in the first 12 days after release. The data represent units sold directly, excluding players via Game Pass, which further expands the impact of the title in early 2025.
The pace of sales has escalated significantly: 500 thousand copies on release, 1 million in 3 days, and now, 2 million in less than two weeks. The numbers were disclosed by the companies on social media and official channels, accompanied by thanks to the community:
“We want to thank all the players who embarked on this journey with us. The support has been incredible,” wrote Sandfall Interactive.
Despite the commercial success, part of the community and specialized critics are still debating the real merit of the game amidst an increasingly saturated market of titles that evoke the tradition of JRPGs without necessarily offering the same level of technical or narrative refinement.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was launched with the proposal to pay homage to great Japanese classics of the genre, like those of the Final Fantasy franchise, but with a European artistic style and an active turn-based combat system. The game stands out for its stylized art direction and a narrative set in a surreal world where characters face an entity that erases people from existence year after year, always on the 33rd day of each cycle.
The title is available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and is also included in the Game Pass, although the disclosed data exclude accesses via subscription service. The commercial performance is particularly impressive considering that this is the first major project of Sandfall, founded by former developers from Ubisoft and other European studios.
It is worth noting that Kepler Interactive, the publisher, has been investing in a cooperative approach among studios, allowing profits and strategic decisions to be shared among the creators — a model that has also benefited games like Tchia and Sifu.
With a solid start and great visibility, Expedition 33 enters the radar as one of the potential contenders for end-of-year awards, although it needs to maintain momentum and demonstrate longevity in the face of upcoming releases in the second semester.
