The Embracer games conglomerate announced the sale of Gearbox Entertainment, responsible for the famous Borderlands series, to publisher Take-Two for $460 million. This strategic move puts the franchise back in the hands of the original publisher.

The deal makes sense, as Take-Two was already the publisher of Borderlands through its 2K Games brand even before Gearbox was acquired by Embracer in 2021. 2K Games stated that the next game in the series is actively in development at Gearbox.

With the transaction, Take-Two also acquires other properties from Gearbox, such as the Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, and Duke Nukem series. Additionally, Gearbox's studios in Frisco, Texas, Montréal, and Quebec are now part of Take-Two.

On the other hand, Embracer retains part of Gearbox's empire, including publishing rights for games like Remnant and Hyper Light Breaker through Gearbox Publishing San Francisco. Cryptic Studios, known for multiplayer games like Neverwinter Online and Star Trek Online, also remains under the umbrella of Embracer.

Gearbox's founder, Randy Pitchford, expressed confidence in the deal, stating that this is the best solution for all parties involved, ensuring that Gearbox game fans continue to receive high-quality experiences in the future.
