Embark Studios breaks up with co-founder after accusations

At Embark Studios, responsible for titles like The Finals and the yet unreleased Arc Raiders, announced that co-founder and head of creation, Rob Runesson, has left the company by mutual agreement. The decision comes after allegations of sexual misconduct involving a content creator from The Finals itself. Although the studio claims to have hired an external law firm for an investigation that, according to them, did not prove the allegations, the board considered Runesson's continued presence unsustainable. It is the type of exhausting situation that shows how the culture of studios founded by industry veterans can still carry behavioral issues that no longer fit the current scenario.

The case came to light through reports indicating psychological pressure and requests for sexual favors by the executive. According to sources close to the case heard by IGN, the influencer felt cornered by financial dependence, as the promotions made by Runesson were vital for the reach of her broadcasts. This unbalanced power dynamic is a chronic problem in the gaming sector, and the fact that the complaint initially reached a community manager without the victim knowing that something was being done exposes flaws in the transparency of internal processes of the studio based in Stockholm.

"The investigation did not substantiate the allegations, but we considered the situation unsustainable and mutually agreed to part ways with Rob." - explained Embark Studios in an official statement.

Embark was founded in 2018 by Patrick Söderlund along with other heavyweights who left DICE, famous for the Battlefield franchise. Runesson was a key part of this group of veterans. Even though the company tries to spin the departure as an amicable one, the weight of an accusation of this magnitude tarnishes the image of a developer that aims to be innovative. It is hard to believe in a purely friendly separation when the backdrop involves harassment and conflicts of interest.

The departure of one of the creative pillars on the eve of important releases can generate turbulence that Embark did not need at the moment. While outlets like GamesIndustry.biz try to obtain more details, what is clear is that the prestige accumulated over years at DICE does not serve as a shield for toxic behaviors. The industry needs to mature its reporting channels so that content creators and employees are not at the mercy of figures in high-ranking positions.

The situation raises a question about how the future projects of the company will be affected by the absence of its original creative leadership. It remains to be seen if this "mutual departure" will be the end of the chapter or if new information will emerge as more people feel safe to speak about the work environment at the developer.
