Echoes of Wisdom earns its place on The Legend of Zelda timeline!

Whenever a new Legend of Zelda is released, I always have difficulty understanding whether it is a standalone game in the franchise, a prequel, or if it really is part of the main story and with The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom it was no different.

After a little wait, we can finally know where the new game in the franchise fits into the story of the classic games!

The Nintendo revealed, on its official website, what is the placement of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom in the controversial and extensive franchise timeline.

The game released in September and it reverses the famous saga formula by having Zelda as a playable character in the narrative of the fallen hero, a branching generated in case Ganon defeats Link in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Thus, Echoes of Wisdom takes place after The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, but before the first The Legend of Zelda.

Check out the official description of the game's context written by the developer:

"The hero Link sets out to rescue Princess Zelda, who has been captured by Ganon. After a fierce battle, Link defeats Ganon, but is swallowed by a mysterious rift. It was as if he had been stolen... Throughout Hyrule, more mysterious rifts are forming and taking the people of Hyrule away. No one is safe — not even the king himself and his advisors, who have also disappeared. Princess Zelda must embark on an adventure to save her father — the king of Hyrule — the people, and Link."

This particular timeline ends with the side-scrolling game Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, a direct sequel to the first game in the saga. The narrative branching where Link triumphs includes two separate timelines, with the first one featuring child Link and the second his adult version.

So far, this is all we know and this should cause more curiosity among players, fans of the game series.

An interesting point to emphasize is that the game producer Eiji Aonuma spoke with IGN, explaining that thinking too much about the history timeline can limit creativity a bit to start new narratives, which makes perfect sense in this case!
